Wavian Jerry Can History: Meaning Behind The Colours

Posted by Robert McJannett on

These leak-proof steel fuel cans come directly from Wavian, the factory that has supplied many NATO countries for over 75 years, and are the highest quality jerry cans on the market today. Rigorously tested, they boast a number of features, including 0.9 mm steel walls, an interior rust-proof lining, internal breather pipe for splash-proof pouring, a three handle configuration for easy carrying, a Leak-proof bayonet closure, and a locking pin for the cap.

Meaning Behind The Colours

Wavian fuel cans come in five different colours, but it's not all just good looks. Fuel and oil cans are colour coded to designate their contents. Read more to learn about each colour.

RED || This is the most common colour for fuel cans, as it is widely used for flammable liquids such as gasoline (American English) or petrol (British English). As we all know, gas is a colourless petroleum-derived flammable liquid that is used primarily as a fuel in spark-ignited internal combustion engines.

BLUE || Blue is often designated for kerosene. Kerosene is widely used to power jet engines of aircraft (jet fuel) and some rocket engines and is also commonly used as a cooking and lighting fuel, and for fire toys such as poi. In parts of Asia, kerosene is sometimes used as fuel for small outboard motors or even motorcycles

YELLOW || Yellow is the colour reserved for diesel fuel containers. Diesel fuel, in general, is any liquid fuel used in diesel engines, whose fuel ignition takes place, without any spark, as a result of compression of the inlet air mixture and then injection of fuel.

GREEN || Straight green is often used for the storage of oils. However, in the case of our OD green fuel cans, the colour is made to match the military green, or "olive drab" colour found on military vehicles.

BLACK || This is a non-designated colour made purely for aesthetic purposes. In all cases, please check your local laws and be sure to coordinate with other users of the fuel cans with their designations and contents.

These NATO diesel jerry cans come in three distinct sizes. 20L (5.3 gallons), 10L (2.6 gallons), and 5L (1.3 gallons). There's a size for every occasion. Each will come with the patented Wavian high-flow safety spout. With this spill-proof spout you won't get diesel anywhere unintended.

The Wavian Gas Can is debatably one of the nicest gas cans out there. It is made from cold rolled steel and is lined to help protect against rusting. It has a 5.28 gallon capacity and is 19 inches tall, 13.5 inches long, and 6.5 inches wide. It is DOT and OSHA compliant and also includes the spout. This gas can comes in a variety of colours and also has various accessories, such as gas can holders as well. This is a very durable option and is our top choice, but it is unfortunately restricted in California.

Also sold as the Anvil Off-Road Jerry Can, a 5.3 gallon steel can with safety cap and spout. It only comes in a red, green, blue, or yellow colour. It is available in all 50 states and is EPA and CARB certified and OSHA compliant. This is also built to DOT, NFPA, and ASTM standards. This gas can is also mountable, but the mounting equipment is sold separately. The safety cap has a locking pin which helps prevent leaks and spills and it also has an internal vent.
